Mozilla Firefox OS has been seen as an alternative mobile OS to Google's Android. And the OS is landing in five countries this year, as per new the new report. Industry watchers have been quite optimistic about the fabled OS, which could further bring down the price of smartphones in developing countries like India and China. Mozilla CEO Gary Kovacs, recently attended D: Dive Into Mobile conference, and was optimistic about the future of Firefox OS.
He [Gary Kovacs] said "We plan to launch in five countries in June and 11 more by the end of the year," Kovacs said. "We plan to hit Venezuela, Poland, Brazil, Portugal and Spain. ... We'll hit the U.S. in 2014." Brazil, Colombia, Hungary, Mexico, Montenegro, Poland, Serbia, Spain, and Venezuela, are the following countries that would get Mozilla's Firefox OS in detail. Unfortunately, India is not on the list citing lack of knowledge about Indian market. Recently the Economic Times reported that Firefox is haven't their mind set about Indian market. "We are targeting the emerging markets for the first versions. We know that the biggest opportunity in mobile is in this segment and we want to offer a Firefox quality, entry-level smartphone experience in this part of the world," Mozilla said in an emailed statement in response to an ET questionnaire about the company's India plans. "However at this time we cannot confirm any specific timeline for when additional markets supporting Firefox OS will be announced." as told to ET by Mozilla, the brain behind Firefox OS." Sony Mobile, an arm of Japanese giant Sony, is said to be working on a Firefox OS powered handset. Designed similar to modern day Xperia E, it could hit Indian market sometime 2014. If a big player like Sony is working hard to woo Indian buyers; it is right to assume that an organization like Mozilla has to bring its own OS in the Indian branded handsets too.
