Belkin International, Inc. is a company best known for making networking solution products, such as routers. It also produces accessories for mobile devices. The company lists more than 30 networking products, as of March 2011. Each of these products ships with individual instructions for how to use and install that specific product. However, some general tips apply to most Belkin networking routers.
Step 1
Locate your Internet Service Provider information. Make a note of your user name and password.
Step 2
Unplug your current router and DSL or cable modem.
Step 3
Place your new Belkin router at table level, away from speakers, magnets and metal objects.
Step 4
Plug your modem into the "WAN" or "Internet" port on the Belkin router. Plug in a USB networking cable between your computer and one of the Belkin's numbered ports. Wait 20 seconds. Plug your router's power supply into the wall outlet. Restart your computer.
Step 5
Click "Start" after your computer boots up. Go to "Control Panel" and click on "Network Connections." This should bring up a screen that allows you to see which network connections are available. Locate "Local Area Connection" or "Wireless Internet Connection" if your router is capable of wireless connections.
Step 6
Locate and click on "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)." Click "Obtain an IP Address Automatically" and locate the link to "Obtain DNS Server Addresses Automatically." This directs the computer to send this information to the new router.
Step 7
Open a browser window and type in your router's URL address if Step 6 isn't effective. The router's address is marked on the product. Log in on the Web page. The router is not shipped with a password, so click "Submit."
Step 8
Locate "Internet WAN." Find "Connection Type." Enter your ISP information from Step 1. If you are using a DSL modem, you will also need the Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE) user name and password. Plug your modem into the power strip and verify that you are able to connect to the Internet.
